What is zumba?
Zumba is a fitness-based dance with roots in Latin culture. As a combination of art and exercise, Zumba emphasizes the values of self-expression, culture, and a healthy connectivity to one’s body.
Why do we do it?
For 3 years, BAWAR facilitated a support group for the girls unit in juvenile hall, engaging the young women in discussions around their rights, needs, and services. In 2013, as a result of schedule restructuring within juvenile hall, this time slot was reassigned to activities related to Large Muscle Exercise. Zumba became the solution to respecting the new changes while still facilitating a safe space for the girls to be who they are and to express themselves freely. We do it because dance is inherently freeing. It can be goofy, joyful, and exhilarating. In this way, Zumba creates a space for the girls to laugh, release, and most importantly to remember that they are kids.
